Riding 600km for Freshwater Conservation, The Old-Fashioned Way
This June, Tanguy Nissou is taking on a challenge to give back to Wānaka, the place where he has been a working-holiday-local. He’ll be biking over 600km from Wānaka to Christchurch on an old, classic bike to raise funds WAI Wānaka to preserve the lakes and rivers for generations to come.

“The landscapes of Aotearoa, from the mountains to the rivers, have shaped so much of who I am. Now, I’m taking on a big challenge to give back.” – Tanguy
KEEPING IT CLASSIC
But he’s not doing this the easy way. Tanguy will be riding an old, classic bike. There’s no fancy gear, no high-tech setup.
“It will just be me, my legs and the open road. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the simplest way is the most meaningful and that real change often comes through grit resilience, and connection to the land.”
In his own words, Tanguy has chosen to support WAI Wānaka for the following reasons:
“WAI Wānaka empowers local communities to understand their environment, recognise their impact and take meaningful action to care for the lakes, rivers and land in our region. They work with farmers, landowners, businesses, schools and volunteers to help build a future where ecosystems thrive and biodiversity can be restored.”
GIVE A LITTLE GOAL
Tanguy has a goal of $5,000 on his Give A Little page and has until July 31 to reach it. Every donation, big and small will directly support WAI’s work in freshwater conservation and community education.
“We’re honoured Tanguy has chosen WAI as the recipient of his mahi. 600kms is no easy feat, even on a high-spec bike, let alone a classic. We love this idea, and why he’s doing it.” – Cat Dillon, WAI Wānaka CEO
Tanguy plans to leave Wānaka the weekend of June 7-8, with the aim of arriving in Christchurch the following weekend (14-16 June). You can follow his progress on his instagram.
WAI Wānaka will also be sharing his story along his journey on their socials.
