WAI Farm Lead

WAI Wānaka

We are a charitable trust whose purpose is to accelerate local action for our fresh water. We are working together to empower communities to understand their water, their environment, and their impact so that we can achieve our common goals for healthy ecosystems and community wellbeing for future generations.

WAI Wānaka started as a group of passionate volunteers in 2016 and are now a bustling workplace of more than 30 people. All of us care deeply about the work we do, collaborating and connecting with others and contributing to our larger WAI vision.

The farm lead role is an exciting opportunity for a personable and likeminded individual to join our team and be part of a quickly evolving industry.


Description of Role

Based in Wānaka and reporting to the WAI Programme Manager, this is a full-time position funded through to June 2024. Your main responsibilities as our farm lead will be to:

  • organise and facilitate landowner groups and work with them to support and achieve their environmental goals, and
  • work within the WAI programmes team to deliver primary sector projects that accelerate landowners towards a sustainable future on the land.

About you
  • Driven to make positive change to the food and fibre sector and the environment.
  • Forward thinking, open to new ideas and able to see projects through to completion.
  • Experienced working in the rural sector and familiar with farm systems and farm plans.
  • Understand the national Primary Sector vision and current regulatory and policy environment for farmers.
  • Facilitation skills and experience would be beneficial.
  • Comfortable with technology and have some understanding of software platforms used in the rural sector.
  • A natural connector and great communicator (written and verbal) who values collaboration to move forward together.
  • Organised with good attention to detail.
  • Adaptable with a systems approach to problems.
  • Can progress multiple priorities autonomously while still contributing to your larger team’s purpose and our WAI vision.
