The Dublin Bay Restoration Group unites passionate local residents with a strong connection to the land within the DOC Dublin Bay Reserve, who wish to protect and enhance the environment of this area. The primary objective of this group is to restore and enhance native biodiversity (both flora and fauna) within the reserve and create a safe and inclusive space for the whole community to enjoy and use for recreation.

The group plan to achieve this by actioning the following goals:

  • Restore historic wetland area by planting natives in collaboration with Te Kākano
  • Control of invasive pest species (both flora and fauna)
  • Foster a sense of pride and connection to place in the community
  • Work with local community groups to deliver the project
  • Restore man-powered recreation in the area

Work so far

  • The group have worked with WAI Wānaka to gain permission from DOC for a restoration project within the Dublin Bay Reserve.
  • Rabbit fencing has been installed, and signage erected to inform the community of the project.
  • The first planting event for the area took place in May 2025, in collaboration with Te Kākano and the Upper Clutha Wilding Tree Group.
  • Volunteers planted over 300 native trees and shrubs within the project area, to begin restoration of the historic ephemeral wetland. Plants were eco-sourced by Te Kākano and funded through Te Kākano Aotearoa Trust and WAI Wānaka.
