WAI Action Groups
WAI Wānaka is connecting landowners, local businesses and the community, working together to protect and enhance our ecosystem for years to come.
With funding assistance from RMPP Action Network, WAI Wānaka supported Upper Clutha landowners and has helped to establish 6 of the 7 catchment groups operating in the Central Lakes District. These groups determine their own priorities for each catchment, receiving a pool of funding to help with group facilitation and to provide access to experts, tools and resources. The science behind how the groups operate is based on a three year research project involving more than 75 farm businesses around NZ.
There are 7 Catchment Groups in the Central Lakes District:
- Lake Hāwea
- Hāwea Flat
- Cardrona
- Luggate
- Maungawera
- Lake Wānaka
- Wakatipu
Within these Catchment Groups, WAI Wānaka works with 6 Facilitators, 18 Experts and 56 Farmers across approximately 160,000 ha of land.
WAI Action Group activities include:
- Water testing programmes
- Riparian planting
- Carbon (GHG) emission calculations
- Business environment plans
- Regenerative farming workshops
- Wetland management
- Biodiversity management
